Nightdive Studios, the developer renowned for remastered releases of various retro titles, is set to be acquired by Atari, it has been announced. The deal will initially be worth $10 million (split equally into upfront cash and Atari shares), and will also include a subsequent earn-out of up to a further $10 million, which will be payable over the course of the next three years, based on Nightdive Studios’ fiscal performance.

It’s confirmed that the deal is expected to close next month.

“Night Dive’s proven expertise and successful track record in commercializing retro IP is well-aligned with Atari’s strategy and I am confident that their combined talent, technology and IP portfolio will contribute to Atari’s future success,” said Atari Chairman and CEO Wade Rosen.

“Night Dive and Atari have a long history together and we know that Atari shares our passion for retro games and our focus on producing high-quality new and remastered games that do justice to the original IP. As we look to grow our business and expand our capabilities, we could think of no better long-term partner than Atari,” said Nightdive principals Stephen Kick and Larry Kuperman.

Nightdive Studios, which was founded over a decade ago in 2012, has become known for releasing remastered versions of a number of classic titles, including the likes of System Shock, System Shock 2, PowerSlave Exhumed, Shadow Man, Doom 64, Quake, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, and more.

The studio is currently working on a ground-up remake of System Shock, which is due out for PC on May 30, with console versions set to arrive later.
