Square Enix Considering Bringing Final Fantasy V and VI to the 3DS

Is all this 3DS news overload pissing you off? Don’t worry, we’ve got more of it for you. Here.

So if anyone here was feeling reasonably confident after the wild success of the DS remakes of Final Fantasy III and IV that V and VI for the quirky handheld couldn’t be that far off, think again. As per Square Enix, the remakes were supposed to be underway for the DS and the DSi, but the development teams ran into several technical issues, presumably the DS/DSi’s limited RAM, dated processor and the restrictions that the small DS carts (with a maximum size of 256 MB so far) place upon game development.

However, this does not indicate the end of the road for some modern, stylised remakes of the old classics. As Square Enix’s Shinji Hashimoto said at this year’s E3, “Rather than creating [Final Fantasy] V or VI for the current DS we want to take a look to see how 3DS does, how it evolves, and then make a decision.”

Of course, by ‘how it evolves,’ Hashimoto is probably referring to just how succesful the 3DS will eventually be. He needn’t really worry about that, though. Considering the total dominance Nintendo’s handhelds have usually experienced, I think it is reasonable to suppose that the 3DS will be a mega hit as well.

This of course means that we can look forward to some high quality remakes of these beloved classics sometime soon in the future. And unlike the DS remakes, which were largely divisive, due in large part to the graphical designs that had been imposed upon them by the DS’s 3D challenged hardware, this time, we’ll get the full fledged experience, which these games truly deserve.
