Sea of Thieves Will Be Substantially Cutting Down Its Install Size On February 6

It’s so good to see a developer actually trying to contain the madness that is modern game file sizes for a change.

Sea of Thieves - Shrouded Spoils

Modern games are really large when installed. This is a fact of life, and something that Xbox One and PS4 owners have made their peace with (or had to make their peace with, since it’s not like they really have a choice). However, Rare at least will be doing their bit to try and reduce the stress on Xbox One and PC owners’ hard drives.

Come February, a new update for the title will substantially decrease the total install size for Sea of Thieves across Xbox One, Xbox One X, and PCs. On the official website of the game, Rare confirmed that the file size on Xbox One will go down from 35GB to 10GB, on Xbox One X from 47GB to 25GB, and on PC from 47GB to 27GB. Rare has also confirmed its intent to change how it deals with game patching in the future, where individual patch sizes may be larger, but the total space the installed game takes on your hard drive won’t increase by as much.

As I said, given how large games on Xbox One and PS4 can be, it’s refreshing to see a developer working to try and control the file sizes for their games a bit.
