These range from the use of non-verbal communication to the brig where players can be sent by crew members.

Sea of Thieves is the upcoming pirate-themed multiplayer game that is being developed by Rare. The game is still in its technical alpha phase, and Rare has released a gorgeous trailer available at 4K resolution that shows the many additions that will be coming to later versions of the game.

The first addition mentioned is the use of non-verbal communication, encouraging the use of contextual messages that help players interact with one another. This comes as a backup option for those who prefer not to use voice chat. The second change comes with the brig that allows crew members to vote a player to be locked in the brig. If you find yourself there, you can try pleading with your crew mates to set you free (although this can only be done via a unanimous decision). The whole thing is of course tongue-in-cheek and exemplifies the kind of sarcastic and witty tone that the game features.

Finally, there is the option to sink one’s own ship (known as scuttling), and then summoning mermaids to salvage what is left of the ship at a safer location. There is also the small ship that is designed for a smaller crew. The small ships makes up for its lack of combat ability with its agility.

All in all, the game seems to be shaping up nicely. Sea of Thieves is set to release in early 2018 for the Xbox One and PC.
