Sea of Thieves was one of the first games that Microsoft launched to its Game Pass program day-and-date at launch, and the game has had a steady stream of updates since then, including a major update that is scheduled to celebrate its one year anniversary coming at the end of the month.

One person that’s definitely proud of the game’s state is Rare’s Studio Head, Craig Duncan. Speaking at EGX Rezzed (you can see the full speech below), he talks about his pride in the hard work of the team and how much they’ve managed to add and improve to the game since launch based on player feedback.

“I am super proud of the team, because I know we ultimately did what we said we were going to do — which was to launch a game, take feedback and evolve it,” said Duncan. “But we always reserve the right to change what those plans are.”

He also wanted to calm some fears current player may have about the upcoming PvP Arena mode that will be included with the anniversary update, saying the mode will have its own unique spin and won’t just be your standard competitive game mode.

“So what is a competitive game in Sea of Thieves?” said Duncan. “There’s no point in us making a competitive game that is the same as another. So for us, it’s about how we do competition in a Sea of Thieves way, in a Rare way, that feels completely different to any other competitive multiplayer game. That was the challenge we set ourselves. Then it becomes how do we iterate and evolve that.”

Sea of Thieves is available now for Xbox One and PC.
