PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds May Get Rare’s Water Tech From Sea of Thieves

"That’s just invaluable, because their water is great."

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a lot of things, but a visual looker it is not. However, at least some aspect of that may be about to change, because in an interview with GamesIndustry, Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene revealed that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds might be getting Rare’s Sea of Thieves water tech soon.

“I was at the Microsoft event last night talking to the Sea of Thieves guys,” he said. “They said they loved the game, they play it a lot, but, ‘Oh, you’re water.’ I mean, our water is not very good, but Rare has great water tech. They said, ‘We should share some knowledge.’ That’s a great thing about being part of a network of studios. We can get that water tech, essentially for free, and we can share stuff with them. That’s just invaluable, because their water is great. Having that would really finish off our world nicely.”

I suppose in a sense, this is another indication of just how deep the relationship between Microsoft and Bluehole really is- and it seems to indicate that the game may really end up remaining Xbox exclusive for the foreseeable future. That or, if it ends up coming to the PS4 after all in the end, there is a possibility that the water tech is nerfed, since it is hugely unlikely that Microsoft will allow for their proprietary tech to run on Sony’s console.

Whatever the game’s future exclusivity status may be, for now, there is no denying the fact that Microsoft has scored a major win by bringing possibly the most popular game of this year on board to the Xbox One as an exclusive- even if only for a limited period. It should definitely help them going into this Holiday season, when the game will launch on the Xbox One, in addition to the PC version which is already out in early access.
