Larian Studios’ Next Game Won’t “Dwarf” Baldur’s Gate 3

Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke also clarified that its next game is new in that it's "different from the things that we've done before."

It’s been a rather interesting Game Developers Conference for Larian Studios, with the developer confirming that Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t receive DLC, expansions or a sequel. Instead, it has two new games in mind, including a “very big RPG” that will dwarf its 2023 magnum opus. Since it doesn’t have the tech yet, this won’t be the studio’s next game.

Instead, it’s working on something new, which studio founder and game director Swen Vincke told Eurogamer is “New in the sense that it is different from the things that we’ve done before.” It will still be “familiar enough, but different,” though the “tone, style, way of doing it are, for us, certainly new – and I think very appealing. I would love to talk about it already – because I’m very excited about it – but I can’t say more. But it’s new in that sense.”

Vincke also clarified that it wouldn’t dwarf Baldur’s Gate 3. “Did I say that, really, like that? I think that I’ve been misquoted on this. I saw that pass by, and I said, ‘I need to check what I actually said’, either because I was heavily jetlagged, so either I said it wrongly, or…

“So it’s not a very big RPG that will dwarf them all, that we’re making now – I mean, like, we have a couple, we have two games that we want to make – and [that] we actually intended on after making Baldur’s Gate 3, so we’re just back on that track now. They’re big and ambitious, that’s for sure. But, I mean, I think scope-wise, Baldur’s Gate 3 is probably already good enough!”

As for what the developer’s next game could be, it’s sadly not Divinity: Original Sin 3. Also, while it moves on to its next project, it will continue working on updates for Baldur’s Gate 3, including mod support, crossplay and more evil endings. Vincke also revealed that the title has sold almost twice as much as Divinity: Original Sin 2 (so around 15 million units). Head here for more details.
