Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Yesterday was a big day for Final Fantasy 7 fans, with the biggest news coming out of its 25th anniversary celebration stream being the announcement of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake. At the same time, Square Enix also confirmed that the Remake saga is going to be a trilogy- and in a message shared on Twitter afterward, Tetsuya Nomura, creative director of the trilogy, shared more details on its development.

Interestingly, development on the third instalment in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is already underway, and also confirmed that the development of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is progressing “rapidly” thanks to a new development structure that Square Enix has adopted for the trilogy.

“The development of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been progressing rapidly since we adopted a new development structure,” Nomura wrote. “A title of this scale in which everything is interconnected even before production began is truly rare. In fact, some development has already begun on the third title. I myself have started on the development and am working towards the completion of the series.”

Given the quick turnaround between the first two instalments (with roughly three years separating the two), one would assume that a similar development model is being followed for the final instalment in the trilogy, which means it could be out by 2026 if things progress well- though of course, one can never be too sure about things in game development, and betting against delays is never smart.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, meanwhile, is scheduled for next Winter, and it’ll launch exclusively for PS5. Before that, later this year, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion will launch for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC.
