Disney on Troubled Star Wars: KOTOR Remake – “There’s Still a Lot of Demand for it”

Recent reports have claimed that the remake has continued to stumble into behind-the-scenes issues.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic - Remake

There have been some conflicting reports in recent weeks about what the state of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake is, with some claiming that development on the project has stopped altogether, and others that the game is still in the works at least in some capacity. One thing that seems clear either way, however, that the KOTOR remake has continued to run into major issues behind-the-scenes, to the extent that there’s widespread doubt about whether it will ever even release.

PlayStation has seemingly made every attempt to distance itself from the project after having been initially partnered with it, while Embracer Group, for its part, has refused to comment on how development is going. And what about Disney, parent company of Lucasfilm and of the Star Wars IP?

Disney’s head of gaming Sean Shoptaw was asked about the Knights of the Old Republic remake in a recent interview with Axios, and though he was unsurprisingly reluctant to provide specifics on how development is proceeding, he acknowledged the widespread love for the original game and the demand for it to return.

“Not a lot I can say on that point for some hopefully obvious reasons, but KOTOR is obviously an incredibly popular game, one that we are incredibly proud of and think that there’s still a lot of demand for. I’ll leave it there,” he said.

Does that mean a remake of Knights of the Old Republic is something that Disney much very much intends to go ahead with regardless of the partner it works with to get it done? Shoptaw has, of course, been purposefully vague in his statement, but it wouldn’t be the most surprising thing in the world if things ended up panning out that way.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake was announced in 2021, though less than a year later, reports emerged that the game had been indefinitely delayed, with developer Aspyr Media being taken off the project. Later reports claimed that Saber Interactive had been handed the reins instead.
