Biomutant Developers Discuss The Game’s Dynamic Weather System

It sounds a lot like Breath of the Wild.

Biomutant

It sounds like in a lot of ways, the upcoming Biomutant, an open world action RPG from THQ Nordic, will be like last year’s seminal The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Just as Breath of the Wild delivered upon a fully systemic open world with a multitude of interlocking mechanics leading to emphasized player agency and emergent gameplay possibilities, so, too, will Biomutant, it sounds like.

One of the systems it will use to achieve this will apparently be weather, which, again, is in the vein of Breath of the Wild. Speaking to OPM in their April issue, the game’s developers talked about the dynamic weather system in the game, and the possibilities that that leads to.

“We have a dynamic weather system. So it can become cold at any time. Obviouydsly, it’s cold at night, et cetera. Certain areas have water, and that freezes to ice. It’d like, ‘oh now I can walk across that.’”

Apparently, this openness ties into mountain climbing, too (sound familiar?). “Some peaks are unreachable unless you have a mount that can climb up the stone wall, or you can get a bionic bow and shoot an arrow to make your own climb spot. There are so many ways to explore.”

This is, of course, all great sounding- the best open world games are the ones that allow the player to mess around with its systems and to affect their own paths through it. Skyrim, Metal Gear Solid V, Breath of the Wild, Far Cry, all are games in this vein. Hopefully, when Biomutant launches, it joins this illustrious list, too.
